Product Description

1869 Virginia & Tennessee RR Bond signed by W Mahone.Ê An historic Virginia railroad with pastoral vignettes of farmer with sythe and train passing farm with industrial area in distant background.Ê Built in the 1850s, the Virginia & Tennessee RR ran through southwestern Virginia along the length of the Great Valley of Virginia.Ê During the Civil War, the railroad served as a key supply, food and troop movement route for the Confederate Army, particularly from the capital of Richmond to the interior at Chattanooga, Tennessee.Ê Union forces captured much of the railroad, destroying tracks and rolling stock in late 1864. After the war, the road was rebuilt under the leadership of former Confederate general William Mahone, who was already president of the South Side RR and the Norfolk and Petersburg RR.Ê Mahone desired to consolidate the three roads and build further west.Ê In 1870, the Virginia & Tennessee RR became part of Mahone's Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio RR.Ê (Source: Wikipedia).Ê This antique stock certificate is in VF condition with a slit cancel on left side of certificate and small x cancels over the Mohone presidential signature.
